Shabbat
Friday Night • 8:00 p.m. • Shabbat Evening Family Service
The Sabbath is celebrated every Friday night at Congregation B'nai Yisrael. For some, Shabbat services are the richest part of their affiliation with our congregation. Participants experience an inner transition and relaxation as the mood of the Shabbat sets in.
With the lighting of the candles, we leave our weekly preoccupations behind in order to focus on our most human feelings among friends.
All of our services are designed to be an experience in Shabbat sharing for all ages.
We have created a series of Friday night services that are prepared by our Rabbis and our Cantor, and the Religious Practices Committee. They are compiled from the writings of rabbis, poets and philosophers set in an abbreviated structure from a traditional service.
The Shabbat service is a time for some to say Kaddish, the prayer recited in memory of a loved one on the anniversary of his or her death (yahrzeit). It is customary for a family to attend Shabbat services on the occasion of the anniversary of a death.
Saturday Morning • 9:00 a.m. • Adult Torah Study of the portion of the week.
Saturday Morning • 10:00 a.m. • B'nai Mitzvah Service (when scheduled)
Saturday Afternoon • 1:00 p.m. • B'nai Mitzvah Service (when scheduled)
Saturday Afternoon • 5:30 p.m. • Havdallah B'nai Mitzvah Service (when scheduled)
Havdallah marks the end of Shabbat and the beginning of the week. The braided candle, the wine and the spice box symbolize, each in its own way, the richness of the Shabbat experience. |
