Community Partner of the Community Center of Northern Westchester
Congregation B’nai Yisrael became the 28th community partner of the Community Center of Northern Westchester in March 2010. Through the efforts of the Caring and Social Action Committee, our congregation supports the Center through a variety of annual events, including weekly food collection and High Holy Day food drive, Zero Waste Day, and our School Supplies, Prom Dresses, and Pajama drives.
The Community Center of Northern Westchester was formed as a response to the Katonah community’s need for food and clothing during an economic downturn in 1992. Today the Community Center offers a range of services, including providing food and clothing for hundreds of households in Northern Westchester, employment counseling and classes, and assisting clients in accessing other resources, including health care, educational and social services. The Community Center operates solely through community partner and individual volunteer efforts and donations.
Blood Drive
CBY hosts a Blood Drive every year with the New York Blood Center so that our families have the opportunity to save at least one life by giving one pint of blood.
Planting Trees in Israel
Upon the death of CBY members or members of their families, the Caring and Social Action Committee provides support and comfort by attending shiva when possible and by memorializing those losses by purchasing trees to be planted in Israel in memory of those individuals from the Jewish National Fund.
